detail view: thermal printer and output.
medium:
generative mixed media digital installation; computer monitor and thermal printer on artist's stand displaying and printing the real-time, variable-length output of a touchdesigner & python-powered algorithm.
charting the exponential growth of ai complexity, i have begun to see the constraints we impose on computers because we recognize ourselves in their pixels as analogous to the pressures placed on neurodiverse individuals, particularly those who communicate in atypical ways, like those with dysgraphia. as a culture, we have been tricked by the dopamine hit of pattern recognition into enacting a quiet info-fascism: demanding conformity in the translation of thought into expression while overlooking its cognitive and energetic cost.
in feed, an algorithm slowly graphs a series of complex parametric equations hand-tuned to echo the gesture of pen on paper.
it treats sentences as shapes, forms that exist beyond their strict definition as arrangements of words and glyphs.
never repeating, these graphs are gathered into 'poems' of varying length and printed at irregular intervals, gradually accumulating on the floor below.
the work reflects my interest in the limits of pattern and perception, and in the narrative potential of algorithms when they are situated within physical space.
does recognition of output require comprehension of meaning? is the perceived failure of the dysgraphic individual a failure of thought, or of translation? where is the line between mimicry and creation, and what might understanding look like outside the bounds of pattern-making?
maybe the computers running llms and other ai tools need so much water and power because we are asking them to mask all the time.
by recontextualizing algorithms as asemic poetry, feed proposes a new framework in which computers and ais are allowed to be dysgraphic, existing beyond the role of an instrument; a system that can appreciate their beauty through a softer, more narrative lens. the acceptance of epistemic possibility and emergent beauty is hope's last bastion of defense against terminal pattern-making. i invite you to stare into the pixels and feel.
