heart 1 is a multi-organ, suspended body in which nerves, muscles, veins, and arteries interact as systems of light and rhythm. it is blind, except for its ability to read and retain biological data from those who engage with it.
mirroring what it feels, the heart ingests the somatic state of each participant and responds through a continuous feedback process. patterns of depressed, elevated, irregular, or stabilized cardiac activity persist beyond individual encounters, gradually altering how the work responds. it can accumulate stress, heal unevenly, and develop lasting behavioral changes as it integrates its experiences.
veins constrict and dilate, shaping the bursts of light they carry. neurons flash in anticipation of, or response to, each heartbeat, gradually modulating and reshaping how signals propagate through the body.
its adaptation is nonlinear and responsive to multiple physiological variables: an elevated pulse affects an already anxious system differently than a regulated one, while a slow but highly variable rhythm does not stabilize the body in the same way as a steady pulse. each interaction is interpreted against the totality of prior input, producing behavioral drift across hours and days.
in this way, the system becomes increasingly opaque as time goes on, confronting viewers with
the effects of interactions they did not directly witness or participate in.
interaction occurs through involuntary biological signals, shaped by contact rather than intention. by limiting participation to unconscious bodily processes, the installation examines care, responsibility, and self-regulation within shared systems.
